Willy Wonka Field Trip

We went to see Willy Wonka at the Bama Theater last week.  Here are some pictures from the bus.

We took a quick picture with some candy before going into the theater.
The students waited patiently in their seats before the show started.

It was a really good show, and they all seemed to enjoy it!

Our Plants

We started a science unit on plants this week. On Friday, students planted their own Wisconsin Fast Growing plant. We hope to have some sprouts in a couple of days.Adding water:

From our STUDENT OF THE WEEK

"So, the ARMT is over, and it is back to normal school for now. Today, we planted plants, and they're called Wisconsin Fast Growing plants. I know that they are going to be pretty. We're learning new vocab words, spelling words, and homophones."

Career Day Friday

In order to show our students all of the opportunities that are available to them, our PTO has organized Career Day Fridays for them. A couple of Fridays each month, different speakers come to share with our students. The speakers describe their occupations and also explain the education and training needed in order to go into their fields.

This morning, Zane's dad came to speak to our class. He is an electrical supervisor of an oil rig. He supervises men from all over the world on his rig. He prepared a video with pictures from his job that the students loved.
Here is our class with Mr. Mitchell.

We also listened to a deputy sheriff. The students were mostly interested in his weapons and how many "bad guys" he had captured.

Finally, we ended our morning by listening to a speech therapist.

Snowball Fight

Our student teacher, Miss Gordon, taught us a FUN game named Snowball Fight. She went over the rules with everyone before we played. To play, you get as many pieces of white paper as there are people playing the game. You make matching sets with the paper. For example, we did vocabulary words. One piece of paper would have a word, and another piece of paper would have a definition. We have also played with math facts, where one piece of paper had a problem and one piece had the solution. The students line up across from each other and throw their "snowballs."They keep picking up snowballs and throwing them at each other until the teacher says stop. They LOVE this part, and it helps to get all of the snowballs really mixed up.Once the teacher says to stop, each student has to pick up a snowball and then he/she must find the other person who has the corresponding snowball. Once a match is made, you must make a snow angel!

Last Minute Practice

We will be taking the math section of the ARMT tomorrow and Wednesday. We spent some time this morning working some problems like we expect to see tomorrow. I was excited because the students are ready and thought that the problems were easy!

Word Problems

The hardest part of a word problem is deciding what operation to use when solving it. To help students, we did an activity where they had to sort the word problems above into a subtraction or addition column with a partner. We have learned some tricks to help us.

A big addition clue is "How many in all?"
A big subtraction clue is "How many/much more?"

From our STUDENT OF THE WEEK

This week, we have been taking the ARMT. I thought it was medium hard. The best part about the ARMT is that we get ice-cream in the afternoons.

Taking a Break

Students have been taking the Alabama Reading and Math Test (ARMT) this week. After a long morning of testing, we went outside to enjoy some ice-cream!

From our STUDENT OF THE WEEK

"Next week is the ARMT, and we are really excited. I can't wait until tomorrow because it is grilled cheese day at lunch. In social studies, we are learning about a little girl named Robin who wants a bat and 2 cd's. She is having to budget her money and make economic choices. She cannot buy both of them. We just read a story about bats. I learned that they take their batlings with them when they hunt."

Math Games

Every morning, students play math games as soon as they finish unpacking. They keep the same partner each morning, but they play a different game. The games cover the skills that we are working on in class. Here are some of the students playing this morning.
The boys had to go to their "multiplication helper" on the desk to check a problem for their game.
